Living essentials
There are quite a few essentials that you should never forget to take camping. First and foremost is, of course, the tent. Before you leave the house, make sure you also have all the equipment needed for putting up a tent: the tent lining, pegs, poles.
To sleep, you can choose from a sleeping bag (we recommend an insulated sleeping bag so that you’re raised a little more off the ground) or an airbed, which will guarantee you a sound night sleep. Just make sure that it fits inside your tent before you leave. If you do decide to go for the airbed, remember to also take the equipment needed for pumping it up.
Before you leave, check the weather forecast so that you take the most suitable clothes. Don’t forget to take personal hygiene products and a pack(s) of toilet paper.
For maximum comfort on your camping trip you could bring a portable fan (for when it’s really hot during the night), a table and some foldable chairs.
First Aid
One of these is a first aid kit. In the woods, anything can happen. You can get burned on the fire, cut up by tree branches or thorns, or get bitten by bugs. It is very important that you are prepared for anything. If you are planning to camp on a hiking trip, then make sure you bring your survival tools.
If you feel like you are being over prepared, you’re on the right track!
Cooking tools
Waterproof matches are very important to bring with you camping because you may have some issues starting a fire. Unless you have been trained on how to start fires, matches are key to doing so. If you do not have a fire on your campsite, there will be no way to heat up food or keep warm. If you are feeling intrepid, you can make your own with our video tutorial.
However, it’s the safety rules of camping don’t recommend starting a campfire, so it’s better to use a gas lighter to cook your meals. Remember to bring a wooden spoon and a stainless steel pot with you for cooking. Take a look at the best foods to pack on a hiking trip.
Keeping the camping area clean is important, so remember to take some bin bags and collect all your rubbish before you leave.
Multi-purpose gadgets
Lanterns, flashlights, and headlamps are very important to bring with you when you go camping. Once it gets dark you will need some way of finding things and seeing whats around you. Also, you will inevitably have to wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom at some point. You will need some sort of light source in order to find your way to the perfect spot. Flashlights and lanterns are very important in this way.
Rope is useful for so many different reasons when camping. You can tie knots onto things that you need to hang up on the campsite, make a clothes line for your wet clothing, and create a shelter for you and your friends. Rope is also important if you decide to do a little climbing whilst you’re camping.
A pocket knife is key to camping. Most campers will bring a Swiss Army knife because it has quite a few different tools on it that you will be able to use while you are camping.
Orientation tools
If you’re camping in an unfamiliar place – especially in mountainous regions – always carry a map showing nearby towns, as well as a GPS.
Also a compass is a very important item to take camping, for helping you to navigate around wherever you are. If you get lost, a compass and map can help you find your way back. Check out this guide on how to use a compass so that you are fully prepared. Nowadays there are also some great hiking apps that can help you orientate.
Be Prepared to Have Fun
Camping is a lot of fun and the more prepared you are, the more fun you can have! By packing all of these items, your stress will be minimized and you can begin to really enjoy the great outdoors.
